Val Kilmer’s daughter Mercedes has expressed how important that it felt for him to relive her father’s Top Gun role.

The 62-year old star is reunited together with Tom Cruise for an emotional scene from Top Gun: Maverick. Mercedes 30, 30 said to that the New York Post she was filming on that day, and described that the meeting was “extraordinary.”

“It means a lot to my dad as he’s very proud of that film. This is what he loves to do,” she told me. “It was trippy and very special for my dad to be on set with all of his friends who made this movie when they were my age.”

Kilmer was Tom “Iceman” Kazansky in the 1986 version, and Cruise currently 59, played Pete “Maverick” Mitchell.

Cruise recently spoke to Entertainment Tonight about his experience playing his role with Kilmer and said that Kilmer “really rallied hard for” Kilmer to play him in the film. He added to Cruise, “The kind of talent that he has, and you see that scene, it’s very special. It’s just very special.”

The producer Jerry Bruckheimer told PEOPLE in the past this year Cruise “really wanted” Kilmer for the upcoming film.

“He said, ‘We have to have Val, we have to have him back. We have to have him in the film,’ ” Bruckheimer told reporters back then. “And he was the driving force. We all wanted him, but Tom was really adamant that if he’s going to make another Top Gun, Val had to be in it.”

Bruckheimer stated that Kilmer has been “such a fine actor, and he’s such a good individual. We had such a good time on the first one and wanted to bring some of the gang back together again.”

Mercedes as well as her younger brother Jack have previously spoken with PEOPLE regarding their father and the battle the actor fought with throat cancer in the year 2015 that required radiation, chemotherapy and a tracheostomy, which damaged his vocal cords permanently and changed his voice.

“When he was first diagnosed, the prognosis did not look very good,” stated Mercedes at the time in august. “But he’s always been very physically resilient. The way he’s related to his illness has definitely been very inspiring. He has such a sense of humor. Even in the hospital he’d be cracking jokes and making all of the doctors laugh. But, of course, it’s really difficult to go through that with a parent and also to go through it with someone in the public eye.”

top Gun: Maverick is playing in theaters on today.
