You’ll be surprised to learn why all jeans have a small pocket inside the front pocket.
We’ve been wondering. No matter how hard we tried, we couldn’t come up with a good use for this small pocket. There’s no room for a phone, and you can’t put bills or small money in there either. The keys, what about them? You’re crazy, you’ll never get the key out again. The Independent says it knows the answer to the question that will never be answered, and it’s probably not what you think it is.
You’ve probably thought about it now and then. No matter if the jeans are for men or women, they all have two front pockets and two back pockets. One of the front pockets has that little pocket on the inside. Why is it there, though?
To find out where it came from, we have to go back almost 200 years. This small pocket wasn’t added to jeans recently. Instead, it was made to solve a problem that no longer exists.
The famous jeans company Levi’s is the one who came up with the idea.
The Independent says that in the 1800s, the first “extra” pocket was used. Why did they do it? For the people who wore jeans the most at the time: cowboys.
Cowboys used to ride with their small pocket watches on a strap or in their coats, but these ways caused the watches to fall and break. Levi’s made jeans with a small pocket that was made to keep the pocket watch safe. With the clock in their pockets, the cowboys didn’t have to worry that it would break while they were riding. Clever!
I wasn’t aware of that. It’s pretty incredible that the design is still used today. Even though cowboys aren’t around anymore, their watch pockets are.
